Gulf of Yera

The Gulf of Yera has to be one of the most beautiful area in Greece and therefore in all the world. Like the Gulf of Kaloni it is a large bay with a small mouth and a breeding ground for sardines amd other fish and sea creatures. Also like Kaloni it is surrounded by olive groves and forests and some of the most fertile land on the island. There are large areas of wetlands and marshes, home for wild birds and animals and there are also hot-springs in the area of Thermi, a 15 minute drive from the city of Mytilini. There are a number of small sea-food tavernas that serve the freshest local fish and are inexpensive. The towns in Yera are mostly agricultural and those on the coast of the bay were formerly industrial with tanneries and olive-oil factories. The ruins of these factories create an interesting background to the natural beauty of the sea and coast.

The hot springs at Thermi Yera are not just a nice place to take a hot mineral bath and cure your aches and pains, but it is also in a beautiful setting with a view of the entire gulf.

The west coast of the gulf of Yera is dotted with small beaches in between forests of reeds and olive groves.

If you are self conscious you can use this handy changing station out in the middle of nowhere.

The town of Perama is a great place to stop and see the old factories. There are a couple beaches here and some good sea-side tavernas and cafes.

The most famous inhabitant of Perama has to be Makis the Pelican who came to town twenty years ago and never left. He has a little house in the square that the townspeople built for him

Eythymios Malamas is the owner of the Krystal Cafe on the waterfront of Perama. He's not your ordinary cafe owner. He is a spiritual writer with a style similar to Dan Millman.

This old windmill is to Perama what the Parthenon is to Athens or the Eifel Tower is to Paris.

This taxi-boat goes every hour from Perama to the port of Skala across the bay where villagers can catch a bus to Mytilini to do some shopping. People from Mytilini come to Perama to eat at the fish restaurants.

Beyond Perama there are some beautiful beaches which get nicer as you get closer to the mouth of the gulf of Yera

This beach is the location of a small fish farm. Fish farming has become popular on the island though like many things in Greece there is controversy over whether the fish tastes as good and is fish farming healthy for the consumer or the environment.

As you get closer to the mouth of the Gulf of Yera the other side gets so close you feel like you could shhot an arrow to the other side.

Finally you get to open sea and the island of Chios in the distance.

The safety of the Gulf makes it an ideal place for fishing boats to stay. They can fish in the gulf or they can venture out into the Aegean. This port is just beyond Perama.

Ths most beautiful time to be in the gulf is around sunset.
